She was named Milagros, or Miracles. For the parents, it was a miracle that they were able to recover their stolen baby girl. Gerali Payano and father Cristian Guzmán Nolasco after a DNA test of the baby were able to leave the Hospital Materno Infantil San Lorenzo de Los Mina with their baby girl.
Around 1am on Saturday, 20 January 2023, the baby had been abducted by Pamela Rosario Suarez, who dressed as a nurse took the baby from the post-partum hall, alleging she would check the baby for fever and never returned. Instead she took a cab to a friend’s house.
The baby was found after the man where the woman stayed overnight in Santo Domingo before heading for her town in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province, told the authorities where they could find the child. The parents cited the complicity of the nurses on call that evening at the hospital. Yet, Dr. Mario Lama, head of the National Health Service (SNS) says there is no evidence of collaboration. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the security in hospitals needs to be improved.
The accusatory file states that Pamela Rosario Suarez entered the public maternity center at 7:40pm on Friday, 20 January, dressed in a nurse’s uniform. However, it was not until 1am on Saturday when she entered room 205 of the postpartum area, on the second level of the maternity ward, and took Gerali Payano’s daughter. She told the mother that the baby had a fever.
“She presented herself with the false identity as a nurse and after placing a thermometer on the baby and assuring the mother that she had a fever and that it was necessary to admit her to the perinatal area to normalize her temperature, she left the room with the baby in her arms,” the file indicates.
The prosecutors say instead of returning the baby to the postpartum ward, the accused took a cab to the house of a friend in Sabana Perdida, to whom she asked for lodging and said that the child was the daughter of a cousin of hers.
Suarez’s lawyer, Rosa Angela Perez, declared that her client is sorry for what she did and suffers from psychological traumas.
The Santo Domingo court postponed the hearing for Friday, 3 February. The judge took the decision accepting the request from the defense for time for their defended to see a psychiatrist.
