
The most recent acts of violence in neighboring Haiti have been answered by an increase in Dominican troop movements to reinforce the army contingent along the border. Army commanding general Carlos Onofre Fernandez told reporters that these troop movements respond to the recent violence in Haiti.
Haiti, itself, is clamoring for international intervention to re-establish law and order. The latest demonstrations originated in protests by the local police in response to government inaction as half a dozen officers were killed just last week. With schools, banks and most commerce shut down, the country was at a standstill.
In a new development, the Bahamas announced it moved its small diplomatic representation in Haiti to the Dominican Republic for safety reasons.
