Carnival parade report

Thousands of people congregated on Santo Domingo’s Malecón to see the National Carnival Parade. Around 150 groups from all around the country paraded on the sea-bordering boulevard to songs and traditional dances.

Listin Diario reported on the good planning of the authorities, the work carried out by the security teams to ensure the safety of all, and yet the relatively low participation of the population.

When talking to people who were enjoying the carnival, they said that the lack of interest in attending was due to the lack of confidence in security. Reportedly, people feared that their mobile could be stolen in the crowd, reported the newspaper.

Rafael Almánzar Mármol and Diomary la Mala were king and queen of the parade. The government awarded the prizes worth two million pesos. There were awards for 10 categories — awarded: Traditional Devils, Fantasy Devils, Historical, Popular Creativity, Ali Baba, Individual Character, Mask and Traditional.

The Ministry of Culture also added awards for Best Choreographic Proposal, Best Musicalization Proposal and the Audience Special Award.

The winners of the awards are to be announced.

The groups paraded from Abraham Lincoln Avenue to the obelisk located in front of Eugenio María de Hostos Park.

The stretch was closed to traffic since Saturday night to facilitate the annual cultural activity. Agents of the Dirección General de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (Digesett) helped to facilitate traffic with detours on the streets and avenues north of the Malecón (Av. George Washington).
