The scene was enough to bring tears to the eyes of the toughest: 10 healthy burros, stretched out in the final throes of death, just left in the sun. The cruelty of such an act was unspeakable.
The police have now arrested the owner of the farm in Santiago Rodriguez province who committed this crime, and he faces severe charges of cruelty to animals as well as other violations of Law 248-12 on Animal Protection.
The fact that the animals are an endangered species meant nothing to the 60-year old man, and he poisoned the animals because they crossed a fence and were on his land.
A lot of people are hoping for a severe punishment for this crime. One legislator is even asking for as much as three years of prison in cases like this.
