Judge Rigoberto Sena Ferreras of the Fourth Court of Instruction of the National District ordered the opening of Fausto Miguel Cruz de la Mota trial. He is accused of killing late Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera on 6 June 2022 in the same office of the minister.
Cruz de la Mota has been serving a year of preventive imprisonment in the Najayo-Men Correction Center. Cruz de la Mota is a childhood friend of the late minister.
The prosecutors say Cruz de la Mota planned the murder because the minister was against granting him permits to export 5,000 tons of used batteries through the company Aurum Gavia.
On his way out of the court, Miguel Cruz justified his decision to commit the crime by expressing that at the time of the tragedy, the former Minister of Environment Orlando Jorge Mera had a firearm.
