
President Luis Abinader has summoned the national political leadership and a committee of intellectuals to the Presidential Palace to participate in the second day of sessions to reach a national pact for the protection and defense of sovereignty, announced Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza.
The leading opposition political parties, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the People’s Force (FP) have announced they will not take part in the talks. Former President Danilo Medina presides the PLD and former President Leonel Fernandez presides the FP.
The talks look into the government’s foreign policy, border control, migration policy and the economic impact of the multidimensional crisis in Haiti on the Dominican Republic. The government seeks the talks will translate into recommendations for public policies and effective measures.
Some stakeholders have proposed including topics such as the social and economic situation of the border, the massive Haitian population in Dominican territory and human rights, among others.
