PLD to use polls to choose its candidates

The Central Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) decided in a meeting on Sunday, 27 March 2023 that polls will elect its candidates for senators, deputies, mayors and directors. There may be exceptions in places where the number of pre-candidates makes this not possible, according to the political party leadership.

The PLD leadership decided that in the case of city and town councilors, these be chosen by the assembly of delegates in the boundary of each territory.

The Central Committee approved a resolution of solidarity and total support to former President Danilo Medina, who this week announced via Twitter that he has prostate cancer.

It also empowered the PLD Political Committee to design the plan for protest mobilizations. The PLD says that the Abinader administration is politicizing corruption cases carried in the judiciary.

The meeting was headed by the president of the Liberation Party and former president of the Republic, Danilo Medina, together with Charles Mariotti, Secretary General; the presidential candidate, Abel Martínez; the Vice President of the PLD, Temístocles Montás; the Campaign Coordinator, Francisco Javier García; and the former Vice Presidents of the Republic Margarita Cedeño and Jaime David Fernández Mirabal.

It was conducted by the Secretary General of the organization Charlie Mariotti and was attended by 926 members out of a total of 1,304, or 71%. The meeting, which inspectors of the Central Electoral Board supervised, began with an attendance of 800 members.

As regards the presidential level, the party says that all that remains to be done is to submit the pre-candidacy of Santiago Mayor and former president of the Chamber of Deputies Abel Martínez to an electoral congress to be ratified and to comply with the Law of Electoral Regime and Political Parties, explained Charles Mariotti.
