Badly injured leatherback turtle rescued in Miches

The leatherback turtle is a frequent visitor to the beaches of the Dominican Republic where it comes to lay eggs in the warm sand. Nowadays the turtle, once endangered and still not out of the woods, is highly protected and respected. Along the coasts of the east, from Miches to Bavaro, these large sea creatures can be seen.

Late last week a group of environmentally-minded people found a leatherback that had apparently been attacked by a shark and that was severely injured in two of its legs. As the around 100-lb creature struggled on the beach of Sabana de Nisibon, rescuers were able to get experts from the Ministry of the Environment to come and take over. These will care for the creature until it is safe for it to return to the sea.
