26 die during Easter long weekend

As of Sunday, 9 April 2023, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) had reported 26 fatalities from various causes, mostly in the 111 traffic accidents. This is the same number of fatalities as in the 2022 safety operation. Motorcycle drivers were involved in 75% of the traffic fatalities, according to data in the third bulletin of the COE. Of the 26 deaths, 22 were in traffic accidents.

According to the COE’s director, former general Juan Mendez, there were four drownings, and the other fatalities were from traffic accidents. Some of these accidents occurred outside of the areas patrolled by the various agencies that collaborate with the COE during these holidays, like the National Police, the Armed Forces and the thousands of volunteers of the Civil Defense.

The COE also reported over nearly 400 persons were treated for alcohol related intoxication.
