Muckraking journalist Nuria Piera aired an investigative TV report revealing more evidence the government is paying millions to sports federations whose presidents are using the funds as if the federations were their personal businesses.
Piera has been airing irregularities at several sports federations, including the pentathlon, swimming, surfing federations, among others. Piera reported that the Ministry of Sports and the Dominican Olympic Committee for decades have done little or nothing to change the lenience that allows the heads of the federations to use funds at their discretion. She said the present authorities continue the same laissez-faire attitude. The incumbent minister of sports is a sports federation president.
Athletes that complain are usually penalized when they denounce irregularities. The Federations can remove their endorsement, impeding these from competing in their sport. This has happened frequently in the past.
