DR students win awards in NASA competition

Dominican students were recognized in four categories during the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) challenge called the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, HERC 2023. Students from INTEC (the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo) made the finals.

The HERC 2023 actually began back in September and October 2022, as NASA sifted through the hundreds of applications and preliminary designs for a human powered rover. Last November the names of the competing teams were released, and just last Friday it was known that the Intec design was among the finalists.

The four Dominican teams competed at the NASA Research and Development Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

One of the interesting facets of all of the proposals was the obligation to include aspects of STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The winning design could be used on the Artemis mission in 2025, which will go to the moon once again.

The competition requires a two person crew—one female required- to traverse a half mile obstacle course. Previously the Apollo 27 Team has garnered the System Safety award (2020) and the ste///m Engagement Award (2022).

Diario Libre reported that three Dominican science teams were recognized in four categories in the Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC 2023) of the NASA.

Artemis 17 of the Scientific High School Dr. Miguel Canela Lazaro in Salcedo and the Instituto Especialiado de Estudios Superiores Loyola in San Cristóbal received the Frank Joe Sexton Memorial Pit Crew Award – High School Division.

The Apolo 27 RD team of the Instituto Tecnológico de anto Domingo (INTEC) received the Most Improved Award and the Spirit Award.
