Dominican wins MIT award for sargassum solution

SOS: Sustainable Oceans Solutions is a winner in MIT’s 22-year old social entrepreneurship program, the Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology Ideas Social Innovation Challenge. The award recognizes the sargassum disposal technology. The emerging company says its SOS Carbon system provides the most value added for global impact by sequestering the carbon contained on the algae

Unlike purpose-built conveyor belt collector boats, SOS Carbon offers a plug-and-play system that can be installed on existing fishing boats. The sargassum collector was created taking into account that small fishing boats are everywhere in the Caribbean and so these are being used as the platform for the innovative collector. The idea is to create employment and scale the solution to the invasive sargassum crisis.

The LCM (Littoral Collection Module, red) is basically a cost-efficient technology adaptable to fishing boats, that allows the pickup of Sargassum not only out in the ocean, but also close to the coast, where the large conveyor boats that are currently in use cannot reach.

The effort was first implemented with the support of Grupo Puntacana in Punta Cana.
