President Luis Abinader inaugurated the Los Alcarrizos tramline on 1 May 2023. The skylift is part of the Santo Domingo Metro system and integrates the large satellite capital city area. The system has been tested and has received international certification. It will travel the 4.2 kilometers at 25 km per hour, fast enough to cover the route in about 15 minutes.
The four stations are ready to receive commuters. The tramline uses 163 cable cars with capacity for 12 persons. It is designed to carry as many as 4,500 persons per hour.
The new mass transit system allows for connections to other transportation facilities. Los Alcarrizos residents can now travel quickly to work or study in the more central areas of Greater Santo Domingo.
The sky lift service will next year integrate with the extension of the Santo Domingo Metro 2C line (7.3 km) that is under construction to connect Los Alcarrizos to the Maria Montez metro station at Autopista Duarte Km 9. The extension is scheduled to be in operation by the first half of 2024.
The Presidency ordered that the sky lift rides will be free for the first month of usage so that people can become familiarized with the service. The fare in June will be RD$35. This includes the transfer to the Omsa bus that will take the commuters to the first line of the Metro. The fare is the same even for those not continuing on the Omsa bus.
