Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visits

Foreign Minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was in the Dominican Republic 27-29 April 2023 to strengthen the ties between the two nations. The visit was the last stop of a tour that took him previously to visit Guyana, Panama and Colombia.

The visit in Santo Domingo was coordinated by Dominican Ambassador in India, David Puig, India Ambassador in the Dominican Republic Ramu Abbagani, and the Ministry of Foreign Relations in both countries. Foreign Minister Jaishankar spoke of the growing relationships between both countries. He said: “The challenge is now how to scale that up.”

During his visit, Foreign Minister Jaishankar attended the formal opening of the Indian Embassy in Santo Domingo with the participation of Vice President Raquel Peña and Eduardo Estrella, president of the Senate and cabinet ministers.

During his visit to the country, the Indian Foreign Minister met with President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, in the interest of maintaining a political dialogue between the Dominican Republic and the Republic of India.

The foreign minister gave a lecture on the foreign policy of his country at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

In honor of the visit of the high-ranking member of the Indian cabinet, the Dominican government unveiled a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Santo Domingo. The visiting foreign minister participated in the official opening of the Permanent Cultural Pavilion of India at the Columbus Lighthouse in eastern Santo Domingo.

The visit was the culmination of many decades of diplomatic maneuvering, initiated in 2006 by Hans Dannenberg Castellanos, the first Dominican ambassador to India, who lasted more than a decade in the position.

At the end of the visit, the foreign ministers signed a joint declaration committing to take positions before international organizations to ensure peace and security.

As reported, the ministers reaffirmed the importance of multilateralism as the ideal mechanism for cooperatively addressing major global challenges and ensuring greater levels of equity. To this end, they emphasized the need for urgent and comprehensive reforms of the UN Security Council to reflect contemporary realities.

Minister Alvarez welcomed the adoption of the “Delhi Declaration on Combating the Use of New and Emerging Technologies for Terrorist Purposes” at the Special Session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC). They also called for the speedy finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism within the UN framework.
