Officially the political campaigns are not supposed to begin until July 2023. Nevertheless, as is apparent from headlines in the media, the billboards and the intense participation on TV, radio and internet platforms, the municipal, congressional and presidential election campaigns have gotten an early start.
Sitting President Luis Abinader has yet to formally announce he will be the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) presidential candidate in the May 2024 election. Former President Leonel Fernandez (People’s Force – Fuerza del Pueblo) is spending billions to remind people that food cost less when he was President. Mayor of Santiago Abel Martinez is the unofficial candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and has gotten off to a slower start but is campaigning intensely, while leaving the door open for a merge between the PLD and the Fuerza del Pueblo to present a unified candidate.
