Indotel is working on expanding optic fiber broadband connections to southern provinces

The president of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), Nelson Arroyo, during his speech on the occasion of the celebration of World Telecommunications Day, reported that the Dominican Republic is the second country in Latin America to have 5G networks, with 51% of the national coverage and a significant increase in fixed internet accounts in homes.

Arroyo explained that in 2020 the country barely had 931,000 fixed Internet accounts, but by 2022, there were 1.1 million, a 23% increase. He said mobile Internet connections went from 7.2 million to 8.9 million, up 24%.

The Indotel director said the government is working on bringing optic fiber broadband connections to the southern provinces. A tender has been called for the company to bring optic fiber connections to 23 municipalities and 61 municipal districts in the south region.

The government has installed 1,120 free WiFi points and estimates that 2.5 million people benefit monthly from this service.
