CNN en Español has put in perspective the tourism boom to the Dominican Republic by comparing it to larger countries, in size and population, in Latin America. Jessica Hasbun reports for CNN that in 2022, the Dominican Republic received more tourists than Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, according to data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The Dominican Republic is 175 times smaller than Brazil, which received 3.6 million tourists in 2022, compared to the more than seven million that traveled to the DR. Colombia registered 4.4 million visitors during the same period.
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili revealed in May that the Caribbean country is above the world average for its rapid recovery in the post-pandemic tourism industry.
The Dominican Republic is moving fast forward to reach 10 million visitors. Tourism David Collado reported on Tuesday, 6 June 2023, that the country by the end of May 2023 had already welcomed more than 4.5 million visitors.
Of these, 3.3 million tourists arrived by air. Another 1.1 million cruise passengers docked in Dominican sea ports, a new record.
The United States is the main source of travelers to the Dominican Republic with 51.6% in May 2023. This was followed by Canada with 11.4%, Colombia with 4.2%, Argentina with 4.1% and Puerto Rico with 3.5%.
The Minister of Tourism expects the DR will receive 7.9 million tourists by air alone, a new record.
