Rector José Hazim Torres of the Universidad Central del Este in San Pedro de Macoris granted a full scholarship to study medicine to 17-year old Ashly Esmeralda Feliciano. The student is recognized for her timely actions that saved the hand of a fellow student.
On Monday, 12 June 2023, the Universidad Central del Este (UCE) awarded the full scholarship to attend medical school to 17-year old Ashly Esmeralda Feliciano, for helping a 15-year old male student whose left hand was cut off outside the José Joaquín Pérez Public High School, located in the Villa Velázquez sector of San Pedro de Macorís. The Police has arrested Juan Manuel Cedano (El Manguito) and Víctor Manuel Ortiz in the criminal case.
Feliciano had taken a first aid course and acted correctly. This enabled plastic surgeons at the Salvador Gautier Teaching Hospital in Santo Domingo to reconnect the teenager’s hand. The teenager is recovering.
