The plenary of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) says it will use its 14,700 scanners and complement these with another 12,000 scanners and laptops to equip 17,200 polling stations in time for the 17 February 2024 municipal elections. The JCE says it will be using the 13,900 printers and 8,500 inverters purchased for the 2020 elections. The decision was approved by representatives of recognized political parties.
JCE president Roman Jaquez said for the 19 May 2024 presidential and congressional elections, 21,000 scanners will be purchased to cover 19,000 polling stations. He said the presidential and congressional elections include overseas constituencies and will require the purchase of 2,000 backup scanners.
The equipment will be first used in the primaries to be held in some districts only by the Modern Revolutionary Parties (PRM) on 1 October 2023.
The laptops will be acquired through a bidding process. Jáquez said that if they are available before the primaries, a hybrid system could be used, which in turn would be a test for the elections of February, May and a possible second round in June.
The JCE reports it has signed an agreement for technical support of the Organization of American States electoral experts in the 2024 general elections.
