Santiago bishop recommends Canada open Haiti office in Haiti

A Santiago Catholic bishop recommends opening in Haiti the proposed Canadian-funded coordinating office to back the initiatives to strengthen the Haitian national police. Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago, Monsignor Carlos Tomas Morel Diplan suggested that Canada find an adequate place in Haiti for the location of the office. Last week, the foreign minister of Canada, Melanie Joly had announced Canada had 20 million dollars to open the office in the Dominican Republic.

The bishop agrees with those that say that installing this office in the Dominican Republic could generate a conflict between both countries.

El Sol de Santiago reported the bishop stated during Sunday mass that each country should have its own procedures and agencies. He does not see the need to install an office for the Haitian police in the Dominican Republic.

Bishop Morel Diplán believes this proposal could generate more tensions and possibly increase conflict between the two nations. Instead, he suggests that Canada should establish its offices in Haiti, as several sectors have requested.

Haiti is expected to be on the agenda of the discussions during the 53rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States. The regular session of the General Assembly is taking place 21-23 June 2023 in Washington, D.C. at the OAS headquarters.

The foreign ministers of Canada Melanie Joly and Dominican Republic Roberto Alvarez are attending the sessions.

The General Assembly is the supreme organ of the Organization of American States and comprises the delegations of all the member states.
