Dominican exports reach US$1.17 billion in May; new Market Intelligence Alert System

Merchandise exports reached US$1,167.6 million in May 2023, according to Biviana Riveiro, executive director of the Dominican Republic Export and Investment Center (ProDominicana).

She said exports were up 8.5% in May, compared to 2022, and 26.7% compared to May 2019, in the pre-pandemic year.

Nevertheless, there is a decline in total exports this year, when compared to 2022. According to data published on the ProDominicana portal, in the first five months of 2023, total exports reached US$5,116.4 million, for a drop of -1.7% compared to the same period in 2022.

According to Central Bank statistics, 2022 was a record year in exports, with US$13,776.9 million.

ProDominicana explains the first five months of 2023 evidence a slowdown that is attributed to external factors, mainly the war in Ukraine and its impact on European economies. Likewise, she said that to restrain inflation, the Central Banks worldwide have exercised controls that reduced purchasing power.

Pro Dominicana announced the implementation of the Market Intelligence Alert System (SAIM) for analyzing these types of external events in time. The tool is helpful for the country to position itself strategically and make better decisions.
