If you haven’t had a bad cold recently, you know someone who has. Five of 45 gathering for their 50th high school anniversary couldn’t make it to the celebrations after testing positive for Covid.
Listin Diario reports that the large number of persons queuing up in the tent set up by the Ministry of Public Health for free tests at its headquarters is proof the virus is again circulating locally.
“Indeed, in the last two weeks, more or less, we have been receiving many, many people. The flow has increased a lot, so much so that I am not from this area but they sent me here because there are too many people and they needed personnel,” said one of the workers, wearing a mask and identified with a t-shirt as a member of the Public Health team.
According to what they said, most of those who come to take the free rapid test, which the Ministry continues to carry out in this and other established Covid vaccination and test points in the country, have symptoms or have been close to someone who has recently tested positive.
Listin Diario reports that in the last week, about 29 out of every 100 samples processed for Covid-19 tested positive for the virus.
According to the most recent Ministry of Health bulletin regarding the disease, at least 26 of the country’s 32 provinces reported between 1 and 209 positive cases, with a higher incidence in Greater Santo Domingo, Santiago, Valverde, Duarte, Dajabón, Espaillat and Hermanas Mirabal.
Although the Ministry of Public Health assures that the disease in the country is under control last Sunday, 25 June 2023 there were 555 active cases of the virus registered, and a weekly positivity of 28.56% and accumulated over the previous four weeks of 9.14%.
Deputy Minister of Collective Health Eladio Perez says necessary control and prevention measures are being applied. He explained Covid is here to stay.
“The cases of Covid-19 detected remain within the expected parameters,” he said. He called for people to get tested if they suspect they have the disease.
Journalist Doris Pantaleon reports there have even been cases of patients that test positive for Covid-19 infection and influenza simultaneously.
The Ministry of Public Health has left it up to individuals to use or not use masks.
