
The Dominican Republic delegation of 13 athletes to the Special Olympics World Games held in Berlin, Germany from 12 to 26 June 2023 brought back eight gold medals, four silvers and two bronzes. The performance compares to Australia, whose athletes brought home 13 gold medals.
The Olympic Committee nor Special Olympics spokespeople have yet to name the winners.
Seven gold medals were won in gymnastics, and one in swimming. Four silver medals and two bronze medals were also won by the special gymnasts.
The Dominican athletes competed in athletics, swimming, gymnastics and bowling, in the international event that brought together more than 7,000 athletes, 170 countries and 25 sports.
In swimming, the Dominicans placed fifth, sixth and seventh; in athletics, they achieved fourth, sixth and eighth place and in bowling, seventh and eighth place in unified pairs.
The Games, the world’s largest inclusive sporting event, finished in Berlin on Sunday night, with a spectacular closing ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate.
