Monte Grande dam set to begin filling in October

The huge dam project at Monte Grande in the province of Barahona is well underway and will “possibly” be finished in September or October of 2023. Hoy and Listin Diario newspaper reporters interviewed the head of the National Institute for Hydraulic Resources (Indrhi), Olmedo Caba, who said the dam is “92% complete.”

President Abinader had said back in February 2023 that the dam would be completed by this month, but that is not going to happen.

The Brazilian construction firm of Andrade Gutierrez is on the job and indications are that the dam “could be” delivered in early fall, maybe September or October of this year.

While the dam itself is 95% completed of the three main floodgates, two are between 30% and 50% completed and the third is being “logistically” prepared for installation to begin.

There are serious issues with the land that will be submerged by the waters behind the dam. the institute has delivered a new town, and rural leaders are concerned about what lands will be given to those that are displaced by the reservoir.
