The Dominican Republic has received more than 5.3 million visitors in the first half of the year, and is on the way to the milestone of 10 million visitors. Most tourists come from the United States and Canada. The record number of arrivals has happened when the Ukraine War has had a major impact on travel from Russia, Ukraine and Europe. South American and Central American air travel and cruise ship passengers have filled the void in the Dominican Republic.
Of the total number of tourists in the first six months, 4,086,675 arrived by air, 10% more than in the first six months of 2022, according to Tourism Minister David Collado. Another 1,267,451 people came via cruise ships. Both air and maritime arrivals are new records in arrivals.
Ministry of Tourism statistics indicate that air arrivals in June 2023 were 707,283 tourists and those to Dominican sea ports were 143,412 visitors arrived aboard cruise ships.
The main countries of origin continue to be the United States and Canada. Travel is increasing from Spain, Argentina and Colombia.
In July alone, 30 cruise ships are scheduled to arrive to the two Puerto Plata cruise ship terminals – Amber Cove and Taino Bay. La Romana’s Casa de Campo cruise ship terminal is third in number of sea arrivals.
During the presentation, Tourism Minister David Collado said that high demand for local products and infastructure works carried out by the government are ensuring there is a trickle down effect of tourism for people in the Dominican Republic, and not just for the major international companies that operate in the country.
