
The strong partnership between the European Union, Latin America, and the Caribbean is vital to bring sustainable and inclusive prosperity and security to people on both sides of the Atlantic, stated Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Union in her remarks when attending the III European-Celac Heads of State and Government Summit. The meeting that is taking place from 17-18 July 2023 in Brussels is regarded as one of the main forums for dialogue and cooperation between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ursula von der Leyen tweeted recognizing the Dominican Republic is the European Union’s largest trading partner in the Caribbean. In her remarks on the bilateral meeting with President Luis Abinader in Brussels, she tweeted assuring the Dominican Republic that EU support for a green transition benefits all. “#GlobalGateway is ready to deliver investments for vital infrastructure,” she tweeted.
Von der Leyen said that the EU-CELAC Summit marks a turning point in the relations between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. “We already have thriving economic ties. Now we want to forge stronger and closer political partnerships,” she tweeted.
She announced that the parties had agreed to deepen the partnership by establishing an #EULAC Digital Alliance. She said “the alliance will create a strategic framework to foster future cooperation on digital matters for the benefit of our citizens”.
The Presidency of the Dominican Republic said the president of the European Union and President Abinader met for about half an hour. President Abinader was accompanied by Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, Deputy Foreign Minister Rubén Silié and the Dominican ambassador to Belgium, Iván Ogando.
