President Abinader’s speech at the III European Union-CELAC meeting

President Luis Abinader called on the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to jointly address the challenges of persistent poverty and inequality, the Presidency of the Dominican Republic reports.

In a speech in front of the leadership of both regions, the Dominican leader also called for measures to promote women’s economic and political empowerment.

“No one can be left on the sidelines,” proclaimed President Abinader.

The Dominican president referred to the need to strengthen EU-CELAC collaboration in the World Trade Organization (WTO). He favored the upcoming reforms to incorporate a strong dispute settlement mechanism applicable to all members.

President Abinader recalled that the two regions are connected by one of the most important networks of trade agreements, bilateral and regional partnerships in the world, which has profoundly benefited them. As he noted, “these agreements are a key engine for growth and job creation.”

He said that spaces such as the European Union-CELAC Summit are an opportunity to openly address the issues of finance for development, debt restructuring and liquidity provision to halt the debt crisis.

President Abinader expressed hope for building on a vision like multilateralism, cohesive societies and sustained commitment to development.

“Continued close cooperation between our regions will further contribute to achieving our shared multilateral commitments, including the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity and other relevant global commitments,” President Abinader said in his speech.
