The Dominican border with Haiti is approximately 396.1 km long, from south to north. The Ministry of Defense took Diario Libre reporters on tour to share information on the border security project under construction. The project encompasses the construction of 164 km of double-lane road with a width of 12 meters to optimize the patrolling of the area with Haiti.
The Ministry of Defense has allocated 15 stretches for the construction of an equal amount of km of block fence. The border construction includes 41 gates of six feet tall and 9.5 ft wide, with 74 surveillance towers. The fences are designed to incorporate advanced technology, including sensors, surveillance cameras, access controls, etc.
The fence sections are going up in five border provinces:
Montecristi is approximately 3 km, Dajabon 72 km., Elias Piña 58 km, Independencia 22 km, and Pedernales 8 km.
The Ministry of Defense stressed in the interview with Diario Libre that the wall does not determine the border. The border will continue to be marked by the posts located since 1929.
Somos Pueblo has raised red alerts that the technology contract for the border fence was awarded irregularly and that the contractors include Haitian citizens.
