Santo Domingo East Mayor Manuel Jimenez (PRM), who is seeking to be reelected in February 2024, called for environmental and animal defense organizations to integrate with the final phase of the Orlando Jorge Mera Ecological Park and the Santo Domingo East Animal Home. Both are ready to be inaugurated in September 2023.
The opening to the general public of the Ecological Park is set for 10 September 2023. The Ecological Park is a protected area of 118,000 square meters with ecological and cultural attractions in East Santo Domingo. It honors the murdered Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera. The area formerly was part of the San Isidro Air Base and soon will be part of green area for the recreation of Santo Domingo East residents.
A first phase of the home for animals will be inaugurated on Sunday, 17 September 2023. It is fit to house ranch animals that have been abandoned in Santo Domingo East. In a second phase, it will be able to receive dogs, cats and other abandoned or mistreated domestic pets.
