Ever since Elly De la Cruz made his debut with the Cincinnati Reds, he has literally “been on fire.” His speed has no match in Major League Baseball. He guns down runners from his defensive position in right field like he held a rifle and not a baseball. His speed around the bases is astounding and he can run from home plate to third base faster than anyone in recorded history.
De la Cruz is fast, very fast. He is stealing bases at a rate of more than one every two games. He is the first player in baseball history to have 40 hits and 15 stolen bases in his first 30 games of his career.
Since his debut on 6 June 2023, the Cincinnati Reds have lost just eight games, going 23-8 with the kid from San Jose de Ocoa, nicknamed La Cocoa” in the lineup.
Last week in Milwaukee, the guys that run the big scoreboard in the center field of American Family Stadium noted that De la Cruz “almost hit a home run in his first turn at bat…but didn’t.” This was on the huge score board as De la Cruz came to bat a second time. He hit a 456-foot home run that forced the camera to zoom out in order to follow its flight, and, in doing so, bring into the picture the jibe by the scoreboard crew still on the big screen.
The following day, when De la Cruz came to bat, the big screen said: “the scoreboard crew have no comment at this time.”
