Limelight on pre-candidates with past criminal records

Julio Romero / N Digital

The media continues to carry stories on political party pre-candidates and candidates for the 2024 municipal, congressional and presidential elections that have criminal records.

For instance, there are many objections to the Fuerza del Pueblo’s choice of Julio Romero for Santo Domingo East mayor candidate. When a deputy for the PRD, Romero had to resign after evidence that he had fathered a child with a minor.

N Digital mentions the cases of several legislators who aspire to continue in their positions when there is evidence of ties to drug trafficking or other criminal activities. Among these are Rosa Amalia Pilarte, deputy for the ruling PRM in La Vega, who aspires to continue in the position. Also, Nelson Marmolejos Gil (Santiago PRM), Faustina Guerrero (PRM-Hato Mayor) and Hector Feliz (PRM-Pedernales), are tied in the media and judiciary to drug trafficking and asset laundering.

Legislators have privileged jurisdiction and their cases can only be heard by the Supreme Court of Justice. The position of the legislature is that until the accused are sentenced, they do not have to leave their positions in Congress. There is a generalized citizen movement to rid the Congress of persons with ties to crime for the 2024-2028 Congress.
