Windfall of visas to DR as violence escalates in Haiti

Border province senator Antonio Marte expresses his concern regarding the increases in the number of visas issued for legal entry of Haitians to the Dominican Republic, as reported in N Digital. He said the 27,000 issued in the past two months means the country is granting around 450 visas a day to Haitians. He called for the Ministry of Foreign Relations to investigate what is going on at the country’s six consulates in Haiti.

Listin Diario has been following the practice of the Dominican government of authorizing a windfall of visas to Haitians for legal travel to the Dominican Republic. The newspaper has carried reports of travel agencies offering to secure the visas for their customers for fees much higher than those established by the government.

The number of visas issued has escalated as the violence in Haiti worsened.

The Listin Diario headlines that Dominican consulates have granted 27,123 visas to Haitians in the past two months. The visas are for multiple business, multiple tourism, residence, business for labor purposes and simple tourism, all in two months.

Listin Diario says the details are in the statistics of Visas Granted by Consulates, carried out by the Ministry of Consular and Migratory Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex), as published yesterday by journalist Geraldino Gonzalez on his X account (formerly Twitter).

A breakdown as to which consulates granted the visas from 1 April to 30 June 2023.
