Recent rains have flooded city streets and brought relief from the intense summer heat. Now the Weather Office (Onamet) only forecasts scattered rains for Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí), La Altagracia (Punta Cana), La Vega and some localities in Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Elías Piña and San Juan de la Maguana. Onamet says showers will be widely isolated over sectors of Greater Santo Domingo, and there will be some showers over localities in the northeast and Caribbean coast, but nothing major.
The bad news is that Saharan Dust cloud concentrations will predominate as the trough moves past the island. Onamet forecasts hot weather and grayish skies and has discontinued the bad weather warnings.
Over the past weekend, in Greater Santo Domingo, urban flooding was reported in Santo Domingo Este, Avenida Venezuela, Avenida del Faro, and the Puente de la 17 bridge. In the National District, also on George Washington (the Malecón), Las Américas, and Winston Churchill avenues, and on the Duarte bridge.
Flooding was also reported on Prolongación 27 de Febrero Avenue, near the Occidental Mall in northern Santo Domingo.
