New traffic lights in Santo Domingo

The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) recently has begun the installation of new traffic lights, which are part of the new Traffic Management and Control Center that will incorporate technology for applying fines without a traffic agent having to be present, Diario Libre reports.

It is the beginning of what, when completed, will be about 2,000 traffic lights, 1,200 cameras and 400 sensors that will be installed at 335 intersections. Six drones are also to be incorporated in the road safety and traffic control. The new system will have the capacity to take photos of drivers and license plates of vehicles that violate traffic laws, mainly going on red.

Intrant has explained that once the new traffic lights are fully operational, the 800 Digesett agents will be assigned to do traffic flow control work.

The technology that is being implemented is in coordination with Google’s Waze platform. The system will work to synchronize, monitor and manage the traffic lights and to allow the driver to know the time to a chosen point. As reported, Waze has more than 700,000 users in the Dominican Republic.

With these facilities, the Intrant projects improvements of more than 25% in the vehicular flow in the intervened demarcations, which will save time and money in the routes.

The first stage is being installed in the National District, later in the Santo Domingo province and then in Santiago.
