DR defeats Canada and loses to Spain in FIBA Basketball World Cup prep games

The Dominican Republic (ranked 23rd) defeated Canada (ranked 15th) 94-88 on 18 August 2023 and lost to Spain (ranked 1st) 86-77 on 19 August 2023 in the FIBA World Cup warm up games played in Granada, Spain. The outcome against Spain tells all that the DR is a team to watch in the World Cup.

The country has a final tune-up game against Egypt (ranked 55th) on 22 August.

NBA players Karl Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Angel Delgado of the LA Clippers and Lester Quiñones of Golden State Warriors reinforced the Dominican team. This is the first time that Quiñones plays for the Dominican Republic. Towns had played for the DR in 2013 when he was 17 years old.

The final tournament of the 2023 FIBA World Cup will take place from 25 August to 10 September in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. The DR will play in Manila, Philippines fighting for victories in Group A against Angola, Italy, and the host Philippines.

The FIBA World Cup brings together 32 countries divided into eight groups to compete in rounds through 10 September 2023 in The Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Coach Nestor Garcia announced the 12-man roster for the Dominican Republic in the World Cup. These are: captain Victor Liz, Karl Towns, Angel Luis Delgado, Lester Quiñones, Eloy Vargas, Andres Feliz, Gelvis Solano, Jean Montero, Rigoberto Mendoxa, LJ Figueroa, Antonio Peña and Angel Gerardo Suero.
