Once again fire affected the tourism areas in Las Terrenas, with a large section of El Paseo Plaza going up in flames on Wednesday, 16 August 2023. Firefighters from several nearby towns arrived on the scene, but the palm-roofed structure of around 10 businesses was consumed very quickly.
As is so frequent, the fire started in a restaurant. Given the circumstances, luckily there were no victims.
Videos on social media showed residents and tourists forming water-bucket brigades of sea water in an attempt to control the blaze and impede it from spreading.
The major impact of the fire will be the loss of jobs and the loss of commercial activity in the area, until it all gets rebuilt.
