What’s the official take on the explosion in San Cristóbal?

A week after the fatal explosion on a central San Cristobal city street, the authorities have not come forward with an official explanation of what happened. Investigative reporter Alicia Ortega of El Informe called for authorities to look into a previous fire that left one dead and a man seriously burned. At the time, the firefighters said when they arrived, there was only smoke. They called for the owner of the plastics factory to remove tanks of organic peroxide found on the premises.

The owner of the Vidal Plastics company that is suspected of being where the explosion started told Ortega of El Informe that no combustible materials were on site. Ortega says that one of the most seriously affected at the time was named to a position in government once he recovered. She interviewed one of the firefighters who was at the scene of the March 2023 fire and he admitted he did not return to the site to inspect if the highly flammable materials had been removed.

An editorial in Diario Libre calls for the government to clear up the mystery surrounding the explosions that killed 32 persons and injured around 60 in the southcentral city.
