Given the intensity of the explosion in San Cristóbal, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) has only been able to recover body parts for many deceased. The Inacif needs to match these with missing persons. Inacif had reported earlier it could take up to six months to identify the corpse parts.
Dr. Santos Jimenez Paez of Inacif says 19 of the 22 human remains scorched in the tragedy that affected San Cristóbal two weeks ago, have yet to be identified, as reported in Hoy. He says the Inacif identified 15 victims, but the 19 remaining body segments are still in the morgue awaiting identification.
During the explosion in San Cristóbal on 14 August 2023, 34 persons were killed, some in the blast and others in hospitals to where they were taken.
Dr. Jimenez Paez said that 22 families have called for using DNA-based genetic tests to identify their relatives, however, this is a complex process.
