This year, the dengue outbreak has come side to side with the early onset of increased respiratory activity reflected by the demand for health services, Listin Diario reports. Measures for the prevention and control of respiratory virus infections should include early diagnosis and adequate clinical management, mainly among populations at high risk of presenting with severe disease, and ensuring respiratory virus vaccination, high vaccination coverage in high-risk groups, and strict compliance with infection prevention control measures.
Dhamelisse Then and Mabel Jones, directors of the Hugo Mendoza Pediatric and Robert Reid Cabral children’s public hospitals, respectively, pointed out that they are seeing an increase in cases of respiratory viruses, such as syncytial, influenza and adenovirus, which cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children and exacerbate asthma attacks in patients.
The Ministry of Public Health says that dengue cases have begun to decline.
