The Dominican Association of Builders and Housing Developers (Acoprovi) is celebrating its 8th National Housing Roundtable on 12 October 2023 at the JW Marriott in Santo Domingo. Acoprovi gathers around 300 of the country’s largest home builders.
Annerys Meléndez, president of the Asociación Dominicana de Constructores y Promotores de Viviendas (Acoprovi), says the theme is Vision 2030: Urban development, sustainability and access to housing for all.
The roundtable is carried out every two years and gathers leading voices interested in the development of housing in the country, ranging from public authorities to builders and financial entities.
Melendez highlighted that there will be working tables on sustainability, innovation and financing and other points of interest to discuss solutions to different challenges.
International guests will address urban development, architectural trends, and the financing network, with talks on using pension funds to facilitate and boost the construction of homes.
Melendez says low-cost financing is a key obstacle to housing construction in the country. She said that the country’s lack of legal guarantees prevents access to the pension funds. She said that the country requires an updated real estate rental law, with new features, obligations and requirements for owners and tenants to boost the sector and promote new investments.
There will be discussions on access to financing for housing in the country, challenges and opportunities. The successful case of the use of pension funds for housing in Peru will be presented.
The event will also focus on the discussions around the Real Estate Rentals and Evictions Bill in the Dominican Republic, and how this legislation could impact and revolutionize the market or have a chilling effect. There will be discussions on urban development in Greater Santo Domingo, Santiago and the Punta Cana area, the most dynamic in the country. Panelists will look into the current situation, challenges and opportunities, the disruptive trends and macrotrends of the housing market.
The development and promotion of the sustainability of construction and housing in the country is on the table. The participants will learn about green taxonomy.
Acoprovi’s proposals will be announced on a comprehensive plan that achieves access to decent housing within the framework of the National Development Strategy (END 2030).
Other activities include the release of the book “Real Estate in the Dominican Republic, Practical Guide,” written by Julissa Burgos; the signing of an inter-institutional agreement will be signed with the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED). The Dominican Construction Code and the Ten-Year Housing Plan in the Dominican Republic will be launched. Also on agenda is the signing of an agreement with Pro Consumidor, the government consumer protection agency, on best practices in home construction, warranty matrix and user manual.
