
The Dominican Republic is currently increasing its diplomatic presence in the former colonies of England and Holland in South America — Guyana and Suriname.
Guyana and Suriname are now independent countries that are blessed with gas and oil deposits awaiting exploitation. The Dominican Republic has been pursuing a diplomatic path for Dominican-based businesses to secure a foothold in the area and participate in the exploitation, refining and commercialization of the oil and gas deposits.
Recently, a visit by the President of Guyana was followed by announcements of investment opportunities and other interesting possibilities.
This past week, the President of Suriname, the former Dutch Guyana, visited the and once again, the theme was investment opportunities in the country was on the table.
President Luis Abinader and Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi signed a letter of understanding regarding the investment opportunities. One of the possibilities is that the Dominican Republic would become a major consumer of crude oil and natural gas from these two countries and also participate in the refining of the crude oil since it has a lot of experience in refining here in Santo Domingo.
