President Abinader urges EU join Kenya-led crisis tackling effort in Haiti

President Luis Abinader urged European Union participation in the task force that will act in Haiti, seeking to bring peace and order as of January 2024. In a conversation with representatives of the European Union at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, 18 October 2023, President Abinader expressed hope that the members of the European Union would be active in finding solutions to the multidimensional crisis that affects Haiti. Abinader called for EU help in creating the conditions for Haiti to move to a path for development.

At present, Haiti is keeping its gates closed to trade from the Dominican Republic. To open to legal trade, Haiti demands the reinstating of free entry of its nationals. The Haitian government rejects the new biometric registry of undocumented persons crossing the border and calls for reinstating the previous practice granting of visas to its nationals as in the past to open its gates to trade. The visas were openly available through travel agencies in Haiti.
