Two Thales radars for Santiago and Puerto Plata airports

The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) says the Dominican government has contracted the installation of new radar systems at the Cibao International Airport (STI-AIC) in Santiago de los Caballeros and at the Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata.

Hector Porcella, director of IDAC, told Diario Libre reporters that the radars respond to needs for enhanced airspace surveillance and meteorological coverage services given the notable growth of air operations in the country’s north.

In the interview, Porcella said one of the radars is for primary and secondary air traffic and another for meteorological use (doppler).

Porcella said the radar system purchased for the Cibao International Airport (AIC) has the 3D function that will allow the IDAC to facilitate airspace surveillance services to the Air Force of the Dominican Republic and the National Drug Control Agency for the monitoring unregistered or illegal air operations.

The official explained that the Cibao radar will cost US$4,986,566.

When asked about the technology contracted with the new equipment, Porcella pointed out that the IDAC has decided to continue to purchase the radars from the same manufacturer, the German company Thales. The Dominican government has been buying these radars for the past three decades. Thales is a major supplier to the Dominican government in other areas of mass transport, such as the Santo Domingo Metro. Porcella explained that keeping with Thales technology responds to the need to maintain a homogeneous air traffic surveillance system.
