
The Dominican Republic won the team gold medal in the taekwondo group women’s team event at the Santiago 2023 Pan Am Games taking place in Santiago de Chile. Dominicans Katherine Rodriguez, Madelyn Rodriguez and Mayerlin Mejia defeated the Mexican team 5-4, 15-8 and 34-32 to win gold.
The Mexicans were the favorites to win the gold. The Mexicans had won six gold medals in taekwondo and 10 medals in the 13 events. 136 taekwondo athletes competed in 13 taekwondo events in Santiago de Chile.
The DR won two medals in taekwondo, including the silver won by Bernardo Pie, and finished 4th in the tournament that gathered 136 taekwondo athletes from the Americas. The DR ended behind Mexico, the United States and Brazil.
The gold medal in taekwondo is the second for the Dominican Republic in the Pan Am Games. The first was in weightlifting.
