The Ministry of Public Works reported this week that thru traffic is resumed on the Duarte Highway in the Villa Altagracia area after two weeks of intense construction at the North-South stretch of the road. Traffic was being detoured to the old road to give time for the installation of a new bridge.
The area connects Km 39 and 45 of Duarte Highway and was known as the “Pass of Death” for the many accidents at the stretch. The Ministry of Public Works says that the closing of the road was also an opportunity to correct the road slant in the so-called Death Curved.
The Ministry of Public Works explains that the an error in the geometric design of the section was corrected. The correction counteracts the effect of centrifugal force on vehicles when these move through the curve.
Henry Vargas, director of Supervision and Inspection at the Ministry of Public Works said that the works cost RD$70 million. The improvements are part of the Duarte Highway transformation and expansion project underway to improve safety on the main road that connects the north and south of the Dominican Republic.
