The General Archives of the Nation announces the hosting of the 10th Dominican History Book Fair on Monday, 13 November through 17 November 2023 at their facilities in the Ciudad Universitaria.
The central theme of the conclave is “Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó: 50 Years of Playa Caracoles.” Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamaño was the leader of the April 1965 civil war that sought to restore the presidency of former President Juan Bosch.
The fair will also pay tribute to Claudio Caamaño Grullón, Hamlet Hermann, Toribio Peña Jáquez, Juan Ramón Payero Ulloa, Mario Nelson Galán Durán, Alfredo Pérez Vargas, Eberto Lalane José and Ramón Euclides Holguín Marte, members of the guerrilla group that landed alongside Caamaño, in Paya Caracoles, on 2 February 1973.
During the Book Fair, Caamaño’s diary and two other volumes will be put into circulation. In it are letters and documents in which the guerrilla leader and former constitutional President of the Republic analyzes political and military situations.
Roberto Cassá, director of the General Archives of the Nation, said that these works are “one of the most relevant bibliographical contributions that make it possible to answer the questions that remained floating in the collective imagination about what happened in the five years of preparations for the project that materialized with the landing on 2 February 1973.”
The first volume corresponds to the diary that Caamaño kept after moving to Cuba until before returning to the DR in January 1973.
The second brings together the correspondence he had with people and political groups and the third includes a variety of documents in which Caamaño focuses his attention on problems and situations of both a political and military nature.
The exhibition includes presentations of new publications, lecture series, workshops, panels, screenings of documentaries, among other attractions.
All of these activities will be open to the general public and free of charge. Cassa explains the purpose is to encourage people to read history. He says it places the knowledge now stored in the National Archives in the hands of all Dominicans.
The Fair program also includes the in-person sale of books with the participation of more than 30 bookstores, authors and publishing houses.
