Did you feel it? Earthquake shakes the northwest and Santiago

The northern part of the country was shaken by a 5.2 quake on Friday, 10 November 2023 in the afternoon.

The US Geological Service rated the quake at 5.0 placing its center about 10 kilometers fro Montecristi in the town of Las Mata de Santa Cruz.

According to Dominican geologist and earthquake expert, Osiris De Leon, this was the strongest quake registered this year in the Dominican Republic. People as far away as Santo Domingo reported feeling the effects of the tremor, and in Santiago, many persons ran out of offices and schools, since the seismic event occurred at 1:20 in the afternoon. Material damages were reported in the northwest and Cibao regions.

The National Seismology Center said the earthquake took place at 1:22pm at a depth of 23 km with its epicenter 8.7 km from Las Matas de Santa Cruz in the northwestern province of Montecristi.
