The toughest visas for Dominicans to obtain

Many DR1 readers know about the list of those countries that do not require a visa for a Dominican to visit. Diario Libre now shares a less-known list of those countries where it is difficult, sometimes really difficult, to obtain a visa to travel to.

Curiously, among those countries is Mexico. Why? Many Dominicans go to Mexico to from there attempt to cross over to the United States.

Several, perhaps dozens of Dominicans have perished in traffic accidents as well as other even horrible incidents, such as suffocation in the back of an abandoned trailer on the roads between Mexico and the United States. As a result, the Mexican consulate is not even receiving visa applications from Dominicans at this time. And, in fact, the visa requirements for Mexico are nearly on par with those for a visa to the United States. The list is long and complicated.

And then there is Canada. While Canada is seeking new residents based on merit, the requirements for a visa are extensive. One of the advantages is that such a visa is valid for the period of validity of one’s passport. Most of the requirements, as with Mexico, center on economic issues such as income, property, and, very importantly, the person can show a reason to return to the Dominican Republic.

The United Kingdom also makes it quite challenging to obtain a visa. The UK requires people to present bank statements for the past six months, where you have traveled to in the past 10 years, and more.

Ireland is one of the wealthiest nations in the world on a per-capita basis. As such, it requires visitors to be substantially financially independent. One needs to request a visa three months before any trip and provide evidence of having at least 500 euros available per month for the stay in Ireland.
