The Medalla del Gordo Award is back. Fundación Francina was honored last week with the medal. The medal today honors the late Freddy Beras Goico, who hosted for decades the TV show, El Gordo de la Semana.

Francina Hungria is a young engineer who lost her eye sight in a robbery. She has gone on to be an example for other blind people. She was recognized for her contributions to the rights of people with visual disabilities. She received the award from Jan Carlo Beras and his wife Pamela Sued.

“For us, it is a great pride to be recognized for the work we have been doing. We are even more happy because the medal embodies the values of commitment, integrity and honesty that don Freddy Beras Goico always expressed,” Hungría remarked.

The Francina Foundation has benefited approximately 7,000 people with disabilities. Its initiatives range from providing white safety canes to education in technology, orientation and mobility, and managing university scholarships and jobs for the visually impaired.

The El Gordo medal ceremony was dropped with the passing away of Beras Goico. But now his son has brought it back in memory of the classic recognition made for years by Don Freddy Beras Goico, who honored people with this award for years.
