Tourism investment continues strong

In his welcoming words at the Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores) Investment Forum, Asonahores president David Llibre, highlighted that in the first half of 2023, the Dominican Republic has received US$2.15 billion in foreign direct investment, of which around US$532 million, or 24%, went to the tourism sector. The amount is 7% more than for the same period in 2022.

Likewise, Technical Vice Minister of the Ministry of Tourism Jacqueline Mora highlighted the steep investment the country has been receiving for tourism ventures during the National Hotel & Tourism Association Investment Forum. She emphasized there is more than US$22.2 trillion invested in the sector. The breakdown is around US$14.9 trillion in hotels and resorts and US$7.4 trillion in real estate properties rented to foreign and domestic tourists.

Mora highlighted the importance of the industry in the Dominican economy, with a contribution of 44% of GDP in tourism, 28% of GDP in restaurants, and 22% of GDP in services.

The tourism sector involves 20% of the direct and indirect generation of employment, positively impacting the lives of Dominicans and the economy, said the deputy minister.
